Universal Health Coverage: Everyone, Everywhere

What is it all about?

World Health Day is an event that is celebrated annually on the 7th of April to raise awareness on various health-related issues.

This year, the World Health Organization (or WHO) identified “Universal Health Coverage” as the theme, drawing mass attention to the importance of public health care.

Universal health coverage is about ensuring that people can get the right medical care, where and when they need it without suffering financial hardship. As the Director-General of the organization said, no one should have to choose between good healthcare and other life necessities.

Although some countries have made great progress, too many people are currently without health care. The challenge lies in maintaining health coverage to meet people’s expectations and needs. As claimed by the WHO, it is set out to start a dialogue and bring awareness to every person’s right to the highest possible level of health.

Access to essential health care for all holds many benefits – it enhances the overall quality of life and life expectancy. In the broader sense, it can protect a country from epidemics, reduce poverty, strengthen gender equality and create job opportunities resulting in economic growth. It is key to the health and wellbeing of a nation inhabitants. According to the WHO, over 100 million people are pushed into poverty because of colossal medical bills.

How do I get involved?

Everyone can play their part in the road to universal health coverage. At least half of the world’s population is currently unable to obtain the necessary health care needed. Have the conversation with your partner and family. Communicate your medical needs, expectations and opinions to policy-makers. Individuals can continue to use their own voices to demand essential health care.

Throughout the campaign, you can share materials and join conversations on social media from Facebook, Twitter and Instagram by using the hashtags #HealthForAll and #WorldHealthDay.

To test your knowledge of universal health care, the World Health Organization has formulated a quiz you can take here.
